The "father of computer"

The foremost multi-use mechanical computing machine was most probably Charles Babbage's "Difference Engine", which got started in 1823 but unfortunately, was not completed.

This man, who was in all probability much ahead of his time, could also not complete his second project - the Analytical engine (1842), mostly because of the incompetence of the contemporary technology.

However, it is relevant to mention that George Scheutz got inspired by Babbage's design of the difference engine and constructed a machine that was the first to be used in computational science.
